Follow Friday - Genre Jumping

Follow Friday is a feature created by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read.  It's a fun blog hop where you meet other book bloggers and find people to follow.
Question: Jumping Genres: Every pick up a book from a genre you usually don't like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place?
I'm not a very romantic person.  I'm a bit of a tomboy, hate weddings and my idea of a date is hiking (okay to be fair this is also my idea of a vacation, hanging out, father-daughter bonding and pretty much my ideal way to spend any pretty day).

It's not that I don't crush on fictional characters.  My favorite love stories always happen in the background.  Take Harry Potter, Tamora Pierce or the Leviathan trilogy, there's crushing and eventually kissing, but it's slow moving and not necessary to the plot.  They're stories that happens to have a romance, not romances that overtake the plot.

That's why I was so surprised when I loved The Raging Quiet by Sherryl Jordan (review here).  Everyone told me to read it.  They told me I would like it.  But it's a romance. On top of that it's a romance with an UGLY cover.  But I trust my friends and the book was everything they'd promised.  The characters were well-developed and the story is well written.  It's proven to me that books can transcend their genre.

While you're in the following mood why don't you go follow me on twitter & say hello.

I don't know the book you mentioned, so I cant comment on that. If you want to know my answer, here's my FF post.

Okay, so this sounds good - even the reviews on amazon were really great for it. Sadly, this is not available for the kindle, but I am looking on eBay right now and I may just buy a copy. Did you know there's one available with a different cover? It looks too modern, though, considering the story. Thanks for making me want to read this! And thanks for visiting my blog! *old follower*

I LOVE Harry Potter, Tamora Pierce (probably one of my all-time fav authors), and the Leviathan series. There are some good romances out there though. :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog and new follower!

Happy Reading!

I quite like the romance genre but the book has to have much more to it than just that. Harry Potter books are amazing and I really want to read the Leviathan series - they've had such great reviews!

New follower!! Thanks so much for following my own blog! :D

I like romance books. However, I don't like the ones that are soley about finding you "true love." I pefer the ones that have a purpose. I saw your review of the book and that is an ugly cover XD But it's nce that you were able to get out of your comfort zone and find a good romace book.

thanks for stopping by my FF. I do like Dystopians' better than I did, I still am careful, need the paranormal mixed in,but that's just me. can't help it. :) I also do not do straight romance, I hate beaches, and the sun (mostly due to I burn in like 5 minutes, blister within 20, that's with sunblock) I have a skin condition, like albino white now, no pigment, so I burn to easy, but love to hike in the forest (all shade) its the rainforest in the mountains of WA state. So I am too, a little bit of a tomboy, lol.

Hi! thnks for stopping by.
I like romance but not the kind: "they were in love at first sight and then they lived happily ever after."
BTW that's not a cute cover it looks like something I drawn.

I've never heard of that book either! but I'd totally be up for reading it. I like more plot than just romance as well and was a huge Harry Potter fan (but harry didn't end up with the right girl IMHO!)

Thanks for stopping by my blog and have a great weekend!

Hopping through. I like romances, but I hear you on having good romances in the background. Especially in books like HP.

I agree. I'm so picky when it comes to romances. And oomph... That cover is UGLY!! lol

I prefer books that happen to have romance in them instead of being romance novels as well. That's one of the main reasons I had loved Leviathan along with it's wonderful world building and characters of course haha.

I'm with you. I'm not too much of a Romantic-Book person. But, occasionally I'll grab one up if the subject looks interesting enough. That's pretty rare though... but you never know!

I'm not a big fan of books in the romance genre either. I like romance in my books, but generally don't buy romance books :) So, I will have to check out this one! Always fun when a book surprises you!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Following you back!

As you can probably tell by my username, I can't FATHOM not liking Romance, but I definitely understand being surprised by books in a genre you've previously disparaged. Mine was non-romance or contemporary romance, but I just as easily could have said Young Adult or Christian novels.

Thanks for stopping by My Follow Friday Post! I'm following back on Linky, GFC, and Twitter :)

I don't like romance books either. I hate the whole love at first sight thing- just strikes me as not realistic. I was commenting on that to my husband and he reminded me that when we met, we both thought, "This is the person I'm going to marry and spend the rest of my life with." We're still together after 20 years. So, he doesn't quite get why I'm so anti-romantic, anti-love at first sight. I think it kind of offends him.

Oh, I love that book, and romance doesn't always do it for me either. I mean, I actually do love romance, but I can't stand the way that most romance novels are written. So a book like The Raging Quiet is such a rare find. I'm so glad you gave it a chance!

I haven't heard of this book. But I'm a big time romance lover and will read anything with romance in it xD I just might look into this one. Have a great weekend :)
